Why We Built GSS

People ask how this started, and the honest version is that it happened faster than we planned.

The short version

Two trainers met. First date in July 2023. Eloped in June 2024. In June 2025 a lease came available on Pennington Drive, and we had about a week to decide whether we were the kind of people who did something like that. We spent thirty days remodeling. I left teaching. We opened in July 2025. We had a baby in July 2026.

Apparently we are not allowed to have a normal summer.

What we actually wanted

Neither of us set out to open a gym because we wanted to own a business. We opened it because we had both spent years working in places where the thing we cared most about was the thing there was never time for.

We wanted a place where somebody could walk in on their first day and not feel like the worst person in the room. Where a coach knew your name before you had to say it twice. Where the equipment was genuinely good, and the equipment was not the point.

I have said this to Jay more times than he wants to hear it: somebody walking into a gym for the first time does not care how expensive your equipment is if they feel uncomfortable being there. He usually agrees, and then buys more equipment anyway.

What we learned in the first year

The training part we knew. We are both coaches. That was never the question.

What surprised us was how much of this turned out to be about relationships. We know which member has a kid with a tournament this weekend. We know who has been quietly working toward a number on a bar for four months. We know when somebody walks through the door and is clearly having a rough day, and we know when to say something and when to leave them alone.

That is not a marketing strategy we came up with. It is just what happens when you keep a gym small enough that people cannot disappear inside it.

It is also why almost everyone who trains here came from somebody else who trains here.

Why membership stays limited

Here is the tension we think about constantly.

We are ambitious about this. We are not trying to build a slightly nicer neighborhood gym. We want GSS to be the strength, recovery, and longevity club that Bluffton is proud of, and we are going to keep investing in it.

But the bigger GSS gets, the more important it becomes that it still feels small. So membership is capped on purpose. At some point we will tell people the club is full, and that will be an uncomfortable business decision, and we will make it anyway. Growth cannot be allowed to destroy the thing people joined for.

Who this is for

Everybody asks whether they need to be in shape first. You do not. That is kind of the point. Come in exactly where you are and we will help you figure out where you are going.

Bodybuilder? Come on. Never touched a barbell? Come on. You do cardio and nothing else and you are worried we are going to judge you for it? Come on. We want people who care about feeling better and living well.

You do not need to change everything overnight. You just need to start showing up consistently.

What we are actually selling

Not access to equipment. Anybody can sell that, and several places in Bluffton sell it cheaper than we do.

We want you doing the things you love ten, twenty, and thirty years from now. Carrying the groceries. Picking up your kids. Traveling. Getting up off the floor without thinking about it. Playing with your grandchildren someday. That is fitness too, and it is the version that actually matters.

The whole idea is pretty simple. We want to know your name, what you are working toward, what has been bothering your shoulder for six months, and what you are hoping your body will still let you do twenty years from now.

Then we want to help you get there, and probably end up knowing your whole family in the process.

Come see us. We are at 48 Pennington Drive, Suite A.

Questions we get

Who owns Goodwin Strength & Stretch?

Jay and Heather Goodwin, a married couple who both coach on the floor. GSS opened in Bluffton, South Carolina in July 2025. Jay is TPI Golf Fitness Level 3 with a master's degree in Kinesiology. Heather is a coach and former educator who leads community, member experience, and nutrition coaching.

Do I need to be in shape before joining GSS?

No. GSS coaches beginners, people returning after years away, older adults, athletes, and pregnant and postpartum clients. Assessment comes first and programming is built from there.

Is GSS a franchise?

No. GSS is independently owned and operated by Jay and Heather Goodwin. It is a DBA of Good Fit & Flexibility LLC.

Why is GSS membership limited?

Membership is capped deliberately so the training floor stays uncrowded and coaches can keep personal relationships with every member as the club grows.

GSS provides fitness, mobility, and wellness services. This content is educational and is not medical diagnosis or treatment.
